J-Tube Pull Calculation – The Old and New

In the old days, the J-tube pull-in analysis was done manually, incorporating the capstan equation or belt friction equation.
However, due to the advancement of engineering simulation software, this calculation is further analyzed with the Finite Element Method, such as the SIMLA, Ansys, OrcaFlex, Flexcom, Abaqus, etc.

Is it necessary?
Could this high-end analysis requirement only apply to the rigid riser pull-in?
What about the J-Tube pull-in operation for flexible products such as umbilical and flexible riser?
